Just One July and Solo September

OK so I know it's August now, but it's been one of those weeks...busy at work and home and barely time for anything!

Just One July was my own little informal SAL where I decided to stitch on just one project for the whole month.  Several stitchers decided to join me and lots of progress has been made!

I was off to a great start to my month by finishing this project which was promised to my younger son back when I started it in January 2014.  Glad to have this off the WIP list...

Cut Thru Pirate Ship by Bothy Threads
Started 6 January 2014, finished 14 July 2016

The second half of the month was much less productive.  I don't know whether the heat got to me or if I'm just not enjoying this project.  I chose to stitch my second oldest WIP and could have had it finished too if I'd spent more time on it.  Anyway, it went from here...

to here...

Family Band Sampler by Riverdrift House

This is stitched on 14 count white aida which isn't something I would choose to work on now but it's surprisingly relaxing and stitches up quickly.  I'm just over halfway through it now but I could have stitched so much more!

I am planning to run my monthly SAL again for Solo September - but this time I will do a "real" SAL with sign-ups!  It will be low stress, the only commitment will be to work on just one project for the whole month (or two if like me you have a finish!) and to post a before and after photo to share your progress.  You can feel free to update your blog during the month to share progress if you wish but there's no obligation to do so.

I will be putting a sign-up page up later in the month, and feel free to join me if you want to make a big dent in something, or if you have a deadline to meet, or just fancy stitching One At A Time for a change!

Happy stitching!

Justine

  2. Congrats again on finishing Cut Thru Pirate Ship . You have made good progress on the Sampler too. I would like to join you for Solo September not sure I can as I travel that month.
One advice, could you try to upload the pictures in large format. The bothy thread piece here is such a lovely piece with tiny details which aren't visible in small format. If you right click the picture when you upload, there is an option of selecting size.

  4. Congratulations again on finishing the pirate ship!!!
And also on making great progress on the sampler. It is a lovely design and I had never heard of it.
I am most likely to join the fun again for September. Not sure yet what I will be working on.

  5. Great finish on the pirate ship, such an achievement to finish another one of the Cut Thru designs! I'll definitely be in on Solo September, not sure what I'll work on yet depends on what stitching I manage in August!

You made lots of progress on your band sampler, too, and it's beautiful.

  7. I was wondering if there would be another one! I couldn't figure out what to call August, but Solo September makes sense. I'll keep it in mind :)

  9. That's a beautiful sampler Justine, you've done so much too. I'd never heard of riverdrift until this month so I must check them out. I'll be joining you for solo September, I've 3 projects in mind...

  12. I'm even more impressed seeing Cut thru Pirate up close after clicking on the picture! Lots of back stitching. The sampler has such pretty colors. I will be sitting out Solo September. I want to stitch holiday items from here on out but I'll be cheering you on!

  13. Great work for JOJ and well done on inspiring so many other stitchers too. Riverdrift do some nice county samplers too, I saw some in Southwold I think, kits sold as holiday souvenirs.
I can't commit to a single project for September but I can Focus on a Finish with one, either Gathering Honey or Little Snap Dragon depending how I feel at the start of the month!

  15. I've told you before how much I like your pirate ship -- it's marvelous. You're such a good stitcher. The sampler is pretty too. So bright and vibrant. Sorry it's not as much fun as you'd like, but maybe when you're able to spend more time on it, it'll grow on you.

I won't be participating in Solo September, though it sounds mighty tempting. I have a long list of Christmas/Holiday/New Years gifts to make, and they're all small, so in September I'll have a whole bunch of finishes. (I'd better!)

  16. You made great use of your JOJ - the pirate ship is wonderful! I love all the little details. And excellent progress on the sampler.

  17. Again, big congratulations on finishing 2 cut-throughs in a year! That's a ton. Plus getting some work in on one that clearly isn't as fun as it used to be is good progress. It could always come out if you get in one of those "need to finish" phases. :) Definitely excited about Solo September, and debating about what to start now. I have a big birthday coming up that month as well.

  18. Again, congrats on finishing the pirate ship. Great progress on the sampler. I'm ready to join you in September. I'm sure I'll still be working on Sleeping Beauty.

  19. Congrats on finishing the Pirate ship. I loved your previous post too where you shared some closeups of your fav bits. It looks amazing. I think you got a lot done on your sampler. It does help to get more in when you enjoy it though. I wholeheartedly agree with you on that. I'm going to see where I get in August, but I'm thinking that I would love to officially join you in Solo September. It will help me start and finish the HAED challenge too. So double woo hoo!!

  22. Fantastic finish and Wonderful progress! I might join you for Solo September. I won't have a lot of time (I have a lot of volunteer duties that month and a convention over a week), but I'd like to try to make awesome progress like you :)

  24. Good progress on the Family Band sampler. Love the finished pirate ship, great work.

  25. I will enjoy following along but I need to work on more than one piece in September. I have several exchanges to get ready for my October retreat. Just love your pirate ship. I know what you mean about the 2nd piece just not being in love with it. My needles seem to slow way way down when I'm bored with a piece.

  26. Justine you've made some great progress! Well done!
Solo September sounds fab, I will definitely give it some thought. It would certainly help me make some good progress on project I've stalled on.

  27. Ahaha, you're continuing to show stitchers just how much can happen if they don't start new projects all the time! It feels good to reduce the WIP pile and start new things guilt-free, weeee~ Even if you didn't finish your sampler, it looks amazing and you had a ton of progress on it! But I agree, it is NO fun to stitch when it is hot. Maybe if we could stitch lying down in front of an A/C!

  28. I'm sure your son is so happy with his pirate ship, Justine! It is such a fun piece to look at and spy all the tiny details... Lovely progress on this sampler--I haven't stitched on Aida in about 15 years either. I'm glad to hear it is going quickly and I look forward to your Solo September pick :)

Hope your August is going well...

  32. I think I will definitely join your Solo September as I MUST finish my Faces of Joan Elliott SAL, before it gets put on the side and never finished! I'm not sure why I'm having such a hard time finishing it, but I need some help, since I've already started postponing adding the beads (and I haven't even finished the stitching!) Watching your wonderful progress has inspired me to work on one thing for a longer period of time!

  33. Well done on the pirate ship! Your Just One idea is really paying off! :o)
Great progress on the band sampler! :o)

  34. What a successful stitchy July you had. Not only did you finis the Pirate Ship but you also got a lot done on the Family Band Sampler. You will certainly be able to finish this one during Solo September. I'm looking forward to this SAL although I'm not sure if I can join you. But at least there will be lots of stitchers that I can follow.

  36. I love the colours in that sampler; red and blue is one of my favourite combinations like ever ever ever. It also looks deceptively simple..... and house motifs are always appealing. If only I had the time......

  37. Wonderful finish on Cut Thru Pirate ship and good luck with finishing your band sampler (love the red/blue combo). Hmm, love the sound of Solo September but I just know that I would find it impossible to stick to only one project! lol!

  38. Your cut thru pirate ship looks amazing Justine. One of the ladies at craft group is doing the North Pole one and is hoping to finish it for Christmas.

You have made great progress on your band sampler.

I would join in on the one project for a month but I know I'd never stick to it! I liked doing one thing for a week though so will do that again!
